BMCのサイモン・ゲランスが引退へ。人生の第2幕は家族とともに。

現在38歳のサイモン・ゲランス。BMCに所属。ワシはScott時代のイメージが強い。わりとみんなもそうなんとちゃうかな？そのサイモン・ゲランスが引退を表明。しかし、本人曰く、「引退ちゃうんや。ただキャリアを変えるだけや」。

ゲランスはBMCが公開した声明（BMC Racing公式：Simon Gerrans Draws End to Cycling Career）によるとこう言う。

 

“Although I feel that I am still performing at a good level physically, my passion for the sport is not what it used to be. Professional cycling is too hard unless you are able to commit wholeheartedly. I am really happy to be able to walk away on my own terms and feel that the end of this season is the right time to transition to a new phase in my life,”

 

訳「まだまだプロの世界でやれると思うんやけど、レースへの情熱がもう昔ほどではないんや。ロードレースはあまりにも過酷すぎるから、何もかも捨てて本気でそれに取り組まなやっていけへんスポーツなんよ。嬉しいことにワシは自分自身の意思でプロの世界に別れを告げられる。それに今年限りってのは、人生の新しい章を始めるためのちょうどええタイミングやと思うしね」

 

そして今後しばらくは、15年にわたるプロ生活で犠牲にしてきた家族にその恩を返したいと言う。

そして長期的な将来への展望という点ではこう言う。

 

“Over the past couple of years I have received some really interesting career opportunities from within and outside the world of cycling. I hope to maintain an involvement with the sport in some capacity, however, initially I am motivated to gain some experience and develop my skills in a new area. I hope that the skills and attributes I have developed and the networks I have built throughout my cycling career will provide a solid foundation to support this goal. The idea of getting out of my comfort zone and embracing a completely new career is daunting, yet excites me, and for these reasons I know it is the right thing to do.”

 

訳「ここ数年ワシは引退後のキャリアについて興味深い話をちょっと聞いてたんよ、ロードレース業界の内外からね。ワシの希望としては、自分ができる範囲でこのスポーツに関わり続けたいと思ってるんやけど、でもしばらくの間は最初にやりたいこととして、新しい分野での経験を積むことやスキルを磨くことや。これまで培ってきたスキルや自分の特性、そしてプロ生活を通じて築き上げたネットワークとかが、ワシのこの目標を実現するためのしっかりした基礎になってくれると期待や。新しい世界に踏み出すこと、これまでと全く異なるキャリアを歩もうとすることは怖いもんや。でもワクワクもさせてくれる。せやからワシは新しいことを始めるのがええんちゃうかと思ってるんよ」

 

ま、やっぱり一流の人間ってのは新しい分野に挑戦することにも貪欲やね。サイモン・ゲランスが言うように不安もあるけど、しっかりと一歩を踏み出す精神力をもっとる。そして新しいことへの挑戦をおもしろいと思っとる。いわゆる日本でいうところの「体育会系」の人間がやたらエネルギッシュでバイタリティーに溢れてそうなイメージあるのは、こういうことかもしれへんね。ほんまかどうか知らんけど、企業が新卒採用で体育会系を好むと言われるのもわからんでもないね。ま、ワシみたいな社会の底辺に漂うブタとは違いますわ。
