黒人選手ケヴィン・レザと人種差別とプロトン

情報源記事では、大手海外自転車メディアVelonewsによるケヴィン・レザへのインタビュー記事が掲載されている。テーマは、黒人差別についてである。

まず、ケヴィン・レザ自身がこれまでチームやプロトン内部で差別を経験したり、感じたことはあるかの質問に対して、ケヴィンは次のように答える。

I don’t think that the majority of the peloton is racist…far from it! I really have not felt this “malaise” in the professional peloton today

訳「プロ選手の大多数は人種差別するような人間ではないと思ってるし、本当にそうじゃないと思ってる。実際に差別による不快感とか感じたことないよ、現代のプロトンではそんなんないよ」

ただし、近年でも例外的にプロトン内部での差別が問題になった事件が2つある。

1つは、2014年のツール・ド・フランスでの事件で、スイス人選手のミヒャエル・アルバジーニ（Michael Albasini）が、ケヴィンに対して差別的な言葉を走ったとされる事件。

そしてもう1つは、2017年のツーロ・ド・ロマンディで当時チームSkyのお騒がせ男、イタリア人選手のジャンニ・モスコン（Gianni Moscon）が、これまたケヴィンに対して差別発言をしたという事件である。（過去記事：チームSkyが人種差別で6週間の出場停止をMosconに課す）

ただ、ケヴィン・レザに言わせればこれら2つの事件は例外中の例外であって、それら以外は本当に差別というものは感じたことがないと述べる。

またプロチームとの契約についても、「結局プロチームは、選手と契約するときもその選手が心身ともにプロとしてのレベルにあるかどうかだけが重要であって、肌の色なんて気にしてないんよ。チームの判断はあくまでプロとしての実力。ただそれだけ」という内容も述べる。

ケヴィン・レザが差別を特に体験することがなかった理由の1つとしてあげるのが、チームや周囲の人間が配慮してくれていること。つまり、彼はこれまで保護されていたのだと述べる。その点について感謝を述べる。

しかし、同時にそういった「保護シェルター」によって、自分は差別があふれる世界の現実から隔離されていたと実感しているとも述べる。

アメリカでのBLM運動での衝撃的なニュースや映像をSNSなどで見て、自分はしっかりと保護されていたこと、そしてそれゆえに同じ黒人の現実をあまりにも知らなかったとも述べている。

そして、差別の歴史や今ある差別問題などを勉強している最中だと言う。加えて、今後自身が差別問題について何ができるのかを自問しているところだと述べる。
