チームEFがイタリアのレースから撤退。どのような考えでの判断なのか？

チームEF Pro Cyclingがイタリアのレースから撤退することが決まった。

チームEFは今週末からのストラーデ・ビアンケ（Strade Bianche）、ミラノ～サンレモ（Milan-San Remo）、そしてティレーノ～アドリアティコ（Tirreno-Adriatico）の3つに出場しないことを決めた。理由はもちろんコロナウィルスである。

同チームの今回の決定は、アメリカ政府機関アメリカ疾病予防管理センター（Centers for Disease Control and Prevention）の勧告に従ったもの。不要不急のイタリアへの渡航をやめましょうという内容がそれ。

本来ワールドツアーへ原則参加が決められているプロチームではあり、正当な理由がなければUCIからルール違反として罰が下る。しかし、今回のチーム決定は、米国の公的機関の方針に従ったものであり、それをレース欠場のための正当な理由として、UCIからなんらの罰も与えられないよう主張しようとしている。

チームのメインスポンサーであるEF社もこのチーム決定を支持している。

Wall Street Journal紙によれば、チームは次のように述べる。

“We think it best to follow this advice and make all efforts to keep our staff and riders healthy and to help ensure they are not at risk of transmitting the virus,”

訳「チームとしては、アメリカ疾病予防管理センターの勧告に従い、スタッフや選手らの健康を第一に考え、ウイルス感染のリスクにさらされないようするのが、ベストだと考えている。」

“The team feels a responsibility to the greater public health efforts in place across affected areas, and we feel a responsibility to our fans and to the people of the towns and cities we travel to as part of the WorldTour.”

訳「チームは感染している場所を含む地域で、さらなる感染を広げないようにすべく公衆の健康に責任があると思っているし、ファンやレース開催都市の人々の健康を守ることにも責任があると思っている」

なお、現在時点ではUCIからの反応はないもよう。
