Raphaのグラベルバイクがおもしろいフレームデザイン

去年、ワールドツアーチームのEF Education First Pro Cyclingの選手らが参戦した世界的なグラベルレースが「Dirty Kanza」。

そのレースで優勝したのがコリン・ストリックランド。そして、2016年に創業した国産にこだわる米国のバイクブランドがALLIED（アライド）が、コリンのために特別なバイクを製作。その特別バイクをRaphaで販売することになった。詳細はRaphaの公式サイト「RAPHA + ALLIED」で。

なぜ今回このブログでそれを紹介するかと言うと、フレームデザインがおもしろいから。特にチェーンステーに着目して欲しい。下の画像を見てほしい。

わかるかな？チェーンステーをみてね。

なんかチェーンステーの位置が変やろ？普通はなんというか、フロントギアの延長線上というの？もっと下のほうに位置してるやん？それが、このバイクではえらい上のほうについてる。

この種のチェーンステー設計をエレベーテッドチェーンステーというらしい。

このデザインはマウンテンバイクでも見られる設計。たとえば、次のFrobidden Bike社のバイクを見てほしい。

このエレベーテッドチェーンステーの狙いは3つ。

1つは、極太タイヤを使えるようにフレームとのタイヤクリアランスを確保すること。2つ目は、大きなタイヤを使うことで長くなりがちなチェーンステーを短くできること。そして、最後にチェーンステーが長くなると（チェーンの長さも長くなる）チェーンが暴れやすくなるため、それを防ぐため。

デメリットは、特殊な構造になるから生産コストが上がること、そしてちょっと重量が増えること。でも、今の時代なら重量増はあまり関係ないかも。なんせMTBでもカーボンフレームがもう当たり前（？）やからね。

決して主流派の設計ではないけど、今でも確実に受け継がれている設計。
